Brian from United Kingdom - The Genius of America

Dear America,

I'm traveling to New York and Washington for the first time in a few weeks. The prospect of going to New York is thrilling. For my whole life I have watched American films and here will be my first chance to see the many landmarks featured in these movies.

I recently saw Saturday Night Fever a wonderful evocation of 70s life in Brooklyn. I saw The Squid and the Whale, too, which is an evocation of Brooklyn in the 1980s. I love the sense of place these films create. The dialogue, and the observations of aspirations and fears, I find fascinating.

I've booked my Sopranos tour, which will take me round all the settings I have grown familiar with, watching six series (or is it seven?) of that amazing drama. I'm looking forward to seeing the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the kind of streets that are featured in The Godfather, Sex in the City and Woody Allen films.

Having had the reputation of being a low-brow culture, the Americans in the last decade have redefined television and its possibilities. I'm a fanatical fan of Alan Ball's Six Feet Under. It's a wonderful series which confronts viewers with all the really big questions. It's funny, profound and moving.

I particularly enjoy the ethnic mix which series like the Sopranos and Six Feet Under explore. For seven years I lived in Bayswater in London. It was a tough place to survive, and the English were a community among many other communities.

London is America these days. The idea of a nation state, an England that is for the English, is defunct. As a culture we are not very good at expressing or depicting this new world we live in. The Americans do it beautifully.

Mamduh from Egypt - I Support You, America

Dear America,

Some people misunderstood my last letter and thought I meant to attack America, and that was not the case.

In fact, I'm one of the few pro-US and pro-Israel people here, and I tend to support the US in its wars.

Because, I mean, without the US going to Iraq, those who are now complaining and attacking the US would still be attacking it anyway, but then it would have been for the reason that the US did NOT help them.

Iraq is now a democratic country, they have cellphones, satellite channels, newspapers, political parties, political debates, political differences, and even political fights. But would they have ever dreamed of any of that if it wasn't for America?

Same thing for Afghanistan. They wouldn't have even been able to dream about being a democracy, or having even if just a little bit of religious freedom, and being in contact with the world around them. Women would still be made to cover up from head to toe.

Some people in here like to treat America as if it's their mother or something (maybe because it's a super-power). They just like to keep complaining under all circumstances, and America is expected to always make them feel better.

Chong from Malaysia - How America Affects Us

Dear America,

I am a Malaysian of Chinese descent. In trade, politics, fashion and especially mass media, America or the US (as we like to call you here) affects us tremendously. Since the late 50s, after we got our independence from Britain, the American influence was all mighty from Elvis Presley and Western cowboy movies. America was the hero, the great country. They brought down the Germans and the Japanese. Our leaders admired you so much that they borrow the stripes of your flag for our new one.

However, of late, your heroic image has taken a dark change. Because of our multi racial and multi religious nature, we are seeing America through colored lenses. Our Malay and Muslim brothers hate the Americans for their war against terrorism which affects Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and the perceived bias for Israel. To the economically vibrant Chinese community here, the key American business role here is increasingly being taken over by an ever stronger China.

I would like to see an America that continues to fight for the weak, the besieged and the poor. The war against terror has taken a paradigm shift that future generations might see as a fight against the weak.

Korova from United Kingdom - The Drowning Man

Dear America,

Your government, not to mention your political system, has failed you. George W Bush has failed you. There are many reasons why I feel that your government has failed you, I hope I can clarify why during the course of this letter.

Your government has failed you at the most basic level. The overriding job of any government is to protect its citizens. That is a fundamental foundation of any civilised nation. Sadly, your government has chosen not to protect its citizens. Instead, it has decided to cut you loose and see if you sink or swim. Inevitably, it is the poor who sink. Take for example the recent legislation rejected by President Bush. Bush had a chance to ensure that every section of society was given the ability to swim. When presented with a bill to extend health insurance to millions of children, he could have chosen to embrace American society and ensure every member of the society was given an equal chance in life, regardless of their financial background. However, he chose (for the fourth time in seven years) to reject this legislation and ensure that millions of the poorest children will be left to sink, to disappear from mainstream society and remain a part of the so-called ‘under-class’. From birth, it would appear that the American government has chosen not to protect its citizens and thus renege on its obligations as a civilised nation.

It is not just in terms of healthcare, the American system (particularly under Bush) has displayed a blatant disregard for the ordinary working man/woman. Many Americans were proud of their achievement of being the ‘Most Productive’ workers, according to a UN report. But this reputation has come at a heavy price. Once again, the political leadership had a choice: protect the citizen, or allow them to sink. Once again, Bush chose the latter. Despite their reputation, the American worker suffers intolerable working standards. Unionisation is practically obsolete, with only 12.5% of workers owning union membership in 2005. Under Bush’s watch, the minimum wage has dropped from $5.84 in 2000 to $5.15 in 2005, the median family income dropped by $1,000 between 200 and 2004 and the lowest quintile saw its annual income after tax decrease by $200, while the top 1% saw their incomes grow by $53,000. The workers have been left to sink by Bush, while the wealthy continue to swim at a healthy pace.

The Bush administration has also failed to protect the rights of the indigenous people of America. When given the opportunity to vote on a treaty that set out the rights of the indigenous people, including protection of their human rights and their land, the United States was one of only four countries to vote against the treaty. Once again, we see how the Bush administration fails to abide by its obligations to protect all its citizens. In fact, its treatment of indigenous people has also been condemned by Amnesty International. Amnesty has claimed that:

Native American and Alaska Native women in the United States suffer disproportionately high levels of rape and sexual violence, yet the federal government has created substantial barriers to accessing justice, Amnesty International (AI) asserted in a 113-page report released today. Justice Department figures indicate that American Indian and Alaska Native women are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than women in the United States in general; more than one in three Native women will be raped in their lifetimes.

Native Americans are, like many other sections of society, left to sink to the bottom. The Bush administration has washed their hands of them, much like the poor and the workers.

But it is not just internal affairs that the Bush administration has failed the American people and endangered them, foreign policy has put America at risk like never before. The sympathy spawned from the attacks on 11th September, has been squandered as the US government seeks it tighten its grip on the world. However, the tighter they squeeze, the more anti-Americanism will grow. This in turn will lead to greater difficulties on the world stage and America’s increased isolation from the civilised world. This isolation will make all Americans vulnerable and put them at great risk. If current trends in foreign policy were to continue, the entire nation will sink without a trace.

In short, the American administration has done its best to ensure that the poor and the dispossessed sink to the bottom, while the wealthy rise to the top. If America is ever going to regain its status as a respected, civilised nation, it needs to stop threatening sovereign nations of the world and start focusing on the needs of the poor in their own country. Martin Luther King once said:

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Forty-four years later, it remains a dream.

Redwing from Germany - The New Age Empire

Dear America,

Excuse me if my English isn't perfect but I guess you will understand what i want to say.

I just want to say that I despise and hate the USA. The USA have forgotten it's rebellious origin and it's liberation fight against the British Empire. Since the end of World War II they've become an empire themselves. They suppress people around the whole world and can't accept that there are more and more of them which shit on the mendacious so called American way of life. They talk about democracy and freedom but they're just interested in might and money. In Vietnam they supported a dictator which canceled the elections because he saw that he won't win them. And then the USA fought against the justified peoples resistance. In Chile the USA pushed a cruel dictator with in neighbour states trained personal terrorists and local people's suppressors to the government and crushed a wonderful socialist democracy and a peoples president (Allende). In Grenada it was almost the same, except of the fact, that the USA lead the Invasion by themselves. They destroyed social hopes of the people and supported dictators!
Especially Latin America was suppressed by that new age empire which thought the whole continent belongs to them and other countries there are just cheap and obeying satellites.

And then take a look at more current times. The USA raid the Iraq and tell us something about mass destruction weapons and liberation but these all are damn lies. There are no mass destruction weapons in the Iraq - unfortunately, because this would have been an impressive defensive measure against evil Invaders from west. The USA have surely more mass destruction weapons than any other nation but dare to forbid and allow other countries to have it or not. The Iraq had been no threat for the world but the USA proved many times that they are. Is there a nation which lead more wars? The USA always fight in foreign countries and dare to talk about defense. In Iraq they just want oil and a bigger presence in the Arab region. They want to expand they're new age empire, like Romans have done in the past. But notice: every empire failed one day. ;-)

The USA expands mass poverty inside the nation and in the world. They keep an evil political system which ends always in crisis- like in world war 2- and in which the absolute majority of all people just can lose. Capitalism is a dark realm of a rich minority- and this means that the system cant work. But the USA defend it despite of that and cause desperation, suppression and poverty. It's not surprising that the resistance in the world against that special kind of terrorism is getting bigger and bigger. The USA talk about cowardly "terrorists" but just dare to fight them miles away from the air with missiles. THIS is cowardly. And they absolutely cant distinguish between origin and result- like the most rulers. They cant or they just don't want.

And take a look inside, man. Over 35 millions in the USA live already in extreme poverty and more and more people have to do two or three jobs a day just to survive. This is no live and no good circumstance. This is f*cking hell- the American way of existing. And it's getting worse and worse. There are so large differences of wealth- and it's a damn minority which has and gets it almost all. This is no justice. And this global tyranny of a rich minority and especially the government of the USA want to force the rest oft all mankind to accepts this system and suffer for it. But we won't- we won't. We don't let us influence by the naive US-propaganda as such easy as us-Americans. ;-) And even they will more and more wake up in the face of that failing capitalistic hell.

Yours Redwing- German neosocialist and webfighter :-)

A hail to the revolution!

PS: Thanks to your mad president because he showed the rest oft the world the true face of the USA better than many presidents before!

Sarmad from Iraq - Where is the New Iraq?

Dear America,

I really don'€™t know from were I should start. From my own problems to the Iraqi's, generally it's been nearly two years since I stopped writing and the main reason was the disappointing situation...yes the disappointing. Is this the new Iraq? This was what we wished to have? Is this the new style of life? At the beginning every thing was okay, and we were saying "no problem". The important thing was we got rid of the dictatorship there. We are after four and half years later and Iraq has gone from dictatorship to the old dark ages. Iraq the country of nations and foundation of humanity sinking in rivers of blood and killings and poorness and thieves and only the name stayed Iraq and every thing else is gone. Who is responsible? Is it us or the others?
All we wanted was simple things. Is it hard to have a these things without these losses? It was very expensive payment, my heart is breaking, and I see my country loses everything...even the simple things that we didn'€™t want anymore.

Lenin from United Kingdom - On Death Wishes

Dear America,

Try to contain your delight at hearing from an epigone of Lenin.

You may wish to know that your continent is surrounded by vast areas of the world that wish you no specific harm. I refer, of course, to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Everywhere else has it in for you. I mean it. Even loyal serfs like South Korea are turning against you, despite the fact that they have clearly modeled their flag on your excellent PepsiCola product (mmm mmm). Poll after global poll finds that most people consider the United States the world's most greatest threat to peace. Like you, and dear President Bush, I have not the slightest understanding of how this state of affairs can have come about, but I am told that it may have something to do with the habit of American governments to initiate wars and, where they don't initiate them, to escalate them to insane peaks of global danger, from the threat to use atomic weapons against North Korea in 1950-1, to the refusal to reunify Germany as a neutral state and the subsequent threat of a hot war with Kruschev, to the Cuban missile crisis in which Kennedy contemplate global nuclear war.

I am further informed that opinion was soured by near-genocidal violence in Korea after the march past the 38th parallel, in Vietnam before and after the march across the 19th parallel, and in the remainder of Indochina in the same period. The use of right-wing dictatorships and death squads to avert outcomes unamenable to American elite interests has also invested an otherwise fine continental principality with a suspicious poo-taint. Lately, certain people (namely, the world) have taken exception to a global war for dominance counterintuitively dubbed the 'war on terror'. I respect and trust Americans too much to believe that they have ever been taken in by that appelation, but it is now beyond your province, and mine.

Amreekans will naturally understand that I personally would wish to enhance their global standing and protect them from global wrath. May I therefore recommend you take the earliest opportunity to overthrow your government, socialise the means of production, distribution and exchange under the control of democratic workers councils, reduce your massive 'defense' industry to what is necessary to defend your land mass and only your land mass, and convert the trillions spent on war-making into useful production and services. Not only would it benefit most Americans to so transform their conditions, but it would also invite countless billions to relax their batties and stop dragging the stars and stripes across the epicentre of their chutney pipes each morning.

Meanwhile, I and my Bolshevik armies will sneak up on America via the Panama Canal and - d'oh!

Laonick from Australia - Burma: Why does the USA Give a Stuff?

Dear America,

You have been asleep for more than 40 years. Your human rights in Vietnam and all the way through the years to Guantanamo Bay Prison Camp is pitiful and now nothing more than a protected chicken pen. The rights of the prisoners are non existent and they are subject to great humility.

I want to get this across because of the human rights issues the USA continuously accuses ASIAN countries of breeching. There seems to be double standards in many areas however the ASIAN countries are far more open, especially compared to secret flights by the CIA into and out of Europe with suspected terrorists who hadn't been charged and other prisoners in Guantanamo who haven't been charged after years of being there and held captive.

Please explain this to the world. We are ready to listen to your 'Human Rights excuse' if you have one.

The world seems to be focusing on Burma now. Why? Maybe to give Iraq a rest.

It would be nice to watch the news for 1 night and not hear a story from Iraq and how many soldiers died, then how many more civilians died in the latest suicide bombing but, if it wasn't for this splatter of blood on the cogwheel of fortune, then why the hell would any them be there?
How many tons of oil were exported today to the USA or Europe compared to 2004?

Give the people some figures and then we might check them out too. Just to keep you Government Departments on the right track. Or tell us where we can find this information.

Thanks.

Nick

Ottavio from Australia

Dear America,

A stated on my weblog, I believe America plays a critical role on the world stage. For all intensive purposes, current "World Order" is stable and predictable in-part due, to the economic, technological, military and diplomatic superpower we know as the The United States. Whether acknowledged or not it is in the world's interest that the U.S. continues to exact its present worldly economic, political, cultural and military influence. An influence that extends to leadership in scientific and technological research and the production of innovative technology based products and services. Our democratic way of life, our economies and our national security, are irrevocably tied to a secure world order - an order, to which the present day United States is at the heart, as the pre-eminent driver of internationalism. Compare this, to the global instability that existed in the first 20 years of the past century and its link to the two world wars that followed.

My blog, although new, shall hopefully serve as a platform of advocacy for the continuation of American dominance because as stated before me, America must remain strong.

Just briefly, I also wish to add that I am proud of my Federal Governments unwavering support for America's war on terrorism.

Bman from Australia

Dear America,

It's always hard to make an unbiased opinion on something. Somewhat contradictory, but I'll give it a shot.

America is no doubt one of the most important countries in the world, and is currently the world's super power. Their export market is high and their military is strong. The country has made many alliances and friend countries, and on the other hand many enemies.

The thing I love about America is what most people would also agree to; the music, film industry, clothing, television shows. Much of this is part of my everyday life and I give thanks to that (considering I think Australian tv shows are just weak).

On the other hand some things about America will always make my blood boil. ..

Government, the bush administration and higher military levels and their poor judgment in the Iraq liberation campaign. I'm a strong believer in the concept that the Iraq war was a scapegoat for Bush. Saddam was a bad man, and his capture was a good day in Iraqi history, but it just torn the country apart. The US troops along with other in the coalition killed many innocent Iraqi civilians in the bombings, and to this day many are still dying from car bombs etc. Many soldiers families will be sad to hear that their son, father, or husband will never come back, all because of some top rank idiots. To me, the Iraq war is pointless, and has more bad points than benefits.

Apart from that, I think the American gun culture is disgraceful. America has has the most murders in any 1st world country, and will always be that way thanks to their stupid constitutional right to bear arms. How many more school massacres have to happen before something is done? Take a guess, its as good as mine.

Another small thing is just general racism. From my perspective America has just recently got over the black (African American) racism that plagued the land for the last 100 years. Blacks are okay to be called blacks, and are accepted as the norm in society along with whites. But now there is a new accepted hatred of the middle eastern orientations. I can't pick that out too much though, its exactly the same here in Australia. I just think our countries need to be a bit more open minded.

Don't get me wrong, no country is perfect. But these are just my thoughts. I wish a good day to everyone reading this.

Lord Le Stat from India - America As Seen By An Indian

Dear America,

This is Lord Le Stat from India. A few days ago, I got an e-mail from your MySpace ID, stating that you would like to have my views about your country.

It is with this regard that I am writing to you.

First and foremost, I love America for it has given me the greatest love of my life, i.e. Rock music. Secondly, I admire the respect that your country shows to individuals and organizations with respect to privacy, intellectual property rights, human rights and how can I not state the "engine" which drives your nation, i.e. capitalism, though not perfect, its good for your country to a certain extent.

I also admire the multi-culturalism that is very much present in your country. If you'd asked me for an opinion about your country a few years back let's say 10 years back, maybe I would not have been bothered to say anything, because I believe that only a decade or so back did racial minorities in your country, primarily, African Americans/Blacks got the respect, which they very well deserved and started being treated as equals.

It is very good to see that your country takes great care of its citizens and also its minorities, i.e. religious, ethnic, linguistic and so on and so forth.

What is also amazing is that you country is the most powerful country in this world, as of now, and like my country, we showed the Brits, who the Boss was, when they colonized our respective nations.

Freedom of speech, highest regard for education and entrepreneurship are something which will help your nation in long term, as they are doing now.

But, like every other thing in life, your nation too isn't without flaws, when I say this, I am talking about your country's foreign policy, vis-a-vis, India & Pakistan.

The US Administration has and will continue to harbour hegemonically ambitions, which too a certain extent are megalomanical, which hasn't always worked out good for US, what with Osama Bin Laden proving to be a Frankenstein's Monster and Russia's recent rise is again not a cause for happiness.

Playing two nations against each other, point in case, rapproachment with India, with whom relations were nothing to speak about during the Cold War, against China, is going to do no good to the US, because if the US continues to do so, it will prove that the US is either ignorant of the term, Frankstein's Monster or is too blinded by its selfishness [selfishness to a certain extent is good, not 100% selfishness = path to self destruction]

If the US could show some sincerity and shed the baggage of hypocrisy, that it has shown while dealing with nations, I believe it would benefit US and other nations.

Last but not the least, I look forward to better and improved relations between India and the US and hope that our two great nations, who not only are the most tolerant, vibrant and greatest democracies and economies of the world, do something for the betterment of the world.

Behrouz from Iran

Dear America,

Voice of America (VOA) is spending lots of money on its Persian TV programs. They just tell us the problems which we, who live in Iran, already know. When people in Iran call them and tell them that we already know these problems, please show us a way to solve these problems, VOA says that our job is to give you info we cannot show you the solutions. This is useless. American tax payers are wasting their money. This is how VOA should do:

1. Some Iranians don't trust America because of the U.S. sponsored coup in 1953 in Iran. According to CIA, America overthrew our legal government at that time. America must accept its mistake in the past and assure Iranians that now we both are in the same side. By toppling Mullahs, America brings security for Americans and Iranians. Both nations will benefit from regime change in Iran. I am sure Iranian people will forgive what America did in 1953.

2. Try to unite Iranian opposition group and ask them to forget their differences. Try to show Iranian people how they can change the regime.

3. Try to find a political leader and interim government for us. Iranian people need a leader and interim government to overthrow the Mullahs.

4. This new leader must travel to Russia, China, and Europe and convince them not to support Mullahs anymore.

If VOA does the above, the Iranian regime will fall and the American tax payers will save their money and we will have peace in the whole world because Iranian regime is the only threat to the world peace.

Thanks,

Rushay from South Africa

Dear America,

God bless America!?
Questions my mind, this mass hysteria!

How do this happen?
Why them, this day?
Painful queries in their hearst will stay!
Scarred souls are born today
Rest in Peace!, innocent souls you may!

Can't take this anymore!
Shoot to kill, thats the way to even the score!
Wait, there's more. Use deadly planes, to crush them all to the floor!
Oh shameful souls answer this? Why? What for?

Hypocritical administrations, corrupt corporations, lies to the nations!
This has all but stretched your patience!
Wisely stimulate, your mind intellectually
Your trigger-finger, sees the illusions eventually.

Destructive measures are not effective
Ask God, the greatest detective!
Peace and understanding, love and compassion
Ask it too much of those who live in cold-hearted fashion?

Thus i have written, for all to see
Could there still be, an American dream for you and me?

Maybe someone can answer my friend Lance?

Hamid from Iran

Dear America,

U.S.A is the country that I've never been there & I think I will never be there!
But this country is very important for me because my favourite singer & some other Iranian artists are living there (because our dictator regime has forbidden their art in Iran!!!).

In other hand, U.S government claims that they want freedom for Iranian people but they do nothing for it!

These days they are only disagreement with nuclear energy in Iran.

I don't know is Islamic Republic searching for atomic bomb or not, but I know abundant attention to this affair, cause to deviate world opinions about human rights in Iran.

Here we cannot express our opinions freely, women have to wear a large veil to cover her body and hair, in university we have to study religion & Islamic subjects and there are a lot of problems..

I just wanna say this:
Nuclear Energy in not most important problem in Iran, please open your eyes...

Sorry for my bad English!!!

Thanks for your attention to my letter your sincerely,

Hamid from Iran

Richard from Sudan - A Beam of Light!

Dear America,

Firstly I would like to thank the Blog to America site for inviting me!! I would equally admit that I've never been to America, and not even willing to (unlike me compatriots in Sudan)!!

I'm going to start from the issue of migration!!

I think that USA has become a super power not because God blessed America with talented people more than anywhere else, but because America had managed and still managing to seduce all the scientist of different specialties from all over the globe, mainly from Russia, German and other small countries including my "my underdeveloped" SUDAN!!
I'm not blaming America, of course, and no one should even think of that, but I'm rather blaming those Immigrants who betrayed their countries and went to sell their knowledge and experience in America for the sake of better life standards!!

My LATE MOTHER once told me that a "TOOCOOL" on your home land better than a castle on a foreign land, because there you'll never feel "HOME" and I think all the foreigners in America including my ELDER BROTHER must reconsider their residence in America, and answer these questions!! What have you done for your home land? Are you really feeling home in America? Do you feel/think that you have the same rights as the real Americans do? I understand that your reasons to migrate was political at most, but have you really solved the problem by immigration? I think escape is never a solution for any situation, but they are rather solved by facing and struggling to make a change!!

When it comes to politics, where I'm not having much interest, I can make a humble comments on the American foreign policy!!

I might agree with them upon the Moral issues like the fight for liberation of people from dictators like Saddam Hussein, but I completely disagree with the selectivity!! because there's no justice in that at all, it's fare to judge a criminal for a guilt, but injust to judge some and leave others!! So if America wanna be just, they should deal with the criminals on an equal base!!
Let's take the invasion of IRAQ as an example, the American government underestimated the Iraqi people right from the start!!

They thought that they will get the mission accomplished in three month and come home with what they could carry, but the reality that they found there was a way far from that!!
till now the Pentagon is not showing the real figures of the troops killed in Iraq!!
And everyday a new bomb attract and more Americans die!!

I'm sure they are thinking day and night about how to end this, but I think this's not gonna end soon!! They cannot move out, because Iraq will be a pore for terrorist, and they will after that come to get you!! And if you stay we'll never be able to stop their attacks!! I'm not supporting them, but I'm saying that you did a very big mistake by getting in there at the first place!!

And president Bush as long as his in charge will keep committing more and more American young men to Iraq, and more insurgencies but as a matter of fact he's just giving militants more targets to shoot!!!

I hope that America learns a lesson from Iraq and never repeats the same mistake in Iran!!
to be continued.......

Blok Inc. from New Zealand - So Much Trouble, So Much Arrogance

Dear America,

Good evening to The United States of Apathy. You are a province that arrogantly parades yourself to the rest of the world as a place of freedom, equality and democracy. Yes there is a world outside your borders. Yes we know you think your better than us. Yes we are sick of you’re sh*t and it wont be tolerated much longer.

Your clock is ticking.

There is nothing free, equal or democratic about your country or even your fragile society.
You are a province that came from such promising beginnings, yet you have grown into a filthy orgy of consumption, corruption and crime. Your forefathers would be ashamed.

But you don’t need us to tell you that, just look outside of your air conditioned apartment. There are no birds singing, no jolly faces. War veterans with missing limbs, lost fighting to protect your "freedom". Homeless, jobless, begging to make a living. Policemen beating, shooting innocent citizens because of their skin pigmentation. Teens not making it to see their 21st birthdays because they eat to much McDonald's. Millions of inefficient engines getting a mere few miles per gallon, pumping thousands of tones of pollutants into OUR atmosphere.

The rich getting richer. The poor getting poorer. The fat getting fatter.

This is how we see you, and you wonder why you have so little friends?

Your people want you to wean out terrorism in you’re precious land. Your answer? Bomb the Iraqis! Hang the leader! Torture defenseless prisoners! Convince the mainstream everything is OK! Your people want out of Iraq and have for a long time. You are still there; loosing sons, brothers, fathers, limbs, lives, wives and for what? Democracy? Justice? Oil? You cant even seem to help yourselves. Don’t get us started on your aid attempt in New Orleans, we'll just say that we bet the response would have been "different" if the disaster was, say, in LA.

Your people want this, your people want that. All they seem to get is the bill for your mistakes.

In a world that is becoming increasingly conscious of your choices, I would advise you watch your steps, as they are being analyzed by the rest of us.

Apathy is bliss.

Rakun from Slovenia

Dear America,

Thanks to Blog To America for finding me on MySpace, so I can somehow send a letter. How to start? I understand what US is doing. Their government do not truly act against terrorism, unless it is within their own borders. They need oil and money from other countries. Their war industry is currently making loads of money, since they supply military of the US, Israel and some NATO forces. Why did they attack Iraq and why don't they attack Iran? Oil and war industry are the first. Iraq could not defend itself against the forces of US and Great Britain, while Iran can, and there is a possibility that Iran holds nuclear, chemical or other weapons, and has a far better organized and well equipped military that could defend itself properly against an invasion of the US.

I know how it looks when government takes hold of the national television, making news reporters be on the side of the government. I know some Americans, that would agree with me, and some, who are fanatical about how terrorism is threatening them and how Bush is great for the defense. I agree with those Americans, who do not support George Bush Jr., because they actually don't believe what their government wants them to believe. Pentagon was NOT damaged by a plane. If it WAS, then there would be a much bigger hole in Pentagon, and there would be pieces of that plane around. FBI confiscated most of cameras around the scene.

An American friend of mine was also sure that the "terrorist attack" on WTC in New York is a fraud. He said, that there were no signs of air companies on the airplanes that crashed into the WTC twins. I'll check that soon if it is true.

Excuse for the government of USA is terrorism, though in real it is economical. They need oil, because USA is running out of it at home. Now they are in need. Why don't they attack Saudi Arabia? Because they are close allies, even when Saudi Arabia does not have democracy. Iran? Because they are far too well organized than Iraq, and war with Iran would crush their economy. Even war in Iraq looks bad enough for the economy of US. North Korea? Government doesn't want World War 3 (Nuclear War).

If a powerful company wants money, they just go to president (and the rest of the government) and 55% of the senate, give them bribes, and US goes to war. Microsoft and arms manufacturing companies are able to do that. And many other companies. Even the companies with funeral activities will get profit from war.

Well, that's about it for now...

With regards,

Rakun

T.A.I.M. S.O.D.S. from South Africa - Take a Stand, Realize Your Freedom!

Dear America,

Firstly I would like everyone to know that I am most certainly not anti-America in anyway. However what we are currently seeing is exactly what happened in my own country of South Africa for 50 years. We are dealing with right wing dictators under the guise of democracy. It is the work of few that are casting a dark shadow over a land of so many. Mr. Bush the most powerful man in the world and his back up crew seem to have a hidden agenda. I say this due to the fact that the cracks in the mighty America are starting to show...big time. Popularity of the country and how the world(ordinary people), perceive America has declined massively. Now due to PIRACY of DVDs and CDs coming from China, America wants to tighten trade with them...because why? I am sure the mighty rising economic empire of China does not endorse illegal trade over its borders on purpose. Is the Bush administration picking a fight with a sleeping giant? My point is this...GOVERNED BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE...is that not the backbone of democracy? It is obvious to me that national pride is still at a all time high and it is what Bush feeds on. No matter what blunder(evil plot) he comes up with, Americans stand firm in the love for their country. Admirable but dangerous...weed out the problem, the very cancer that surely will destroy democracy! Corruption is one thing but blatant disregard for the peoples rights to freedom is a very different one. One that should not be tolerated...why are young boys still being blown up along side roads in Iraq. I am sure these boys would rather be sipping a Millers lite and puffing a Malboro with his/her partner AT HOME!! Our sympathy goes to the American people, it took us 50 years to reach democracy. America always had it but in 50 years it seems you have finally reached your national socialistic state. South Africa and America have merely traded places....so I urge the people of America to take a stand as they did against apartheid! Fight the wrongs happening in your very own country, the world sees it surely you can too. For the most part we are positive that the bright shining torch bearer of democracy will return to us. Question is will this happen before that dictator does anything everyones going to regret?

Gustavo from Peru - The United States is NOT America

Dear America,

Well, there is something that has always bothered me and a lot of my friends, and it has probably bothered a lot of Latin American people too...

Personally, I really hate it when the citizens of the United States of America call themselves "Americans" and that they live in "America". I am really sorry to enlighten you, but your country IS NOT called America, it is called the "United States of America".

America is a continent divided in THREE parts, that would be North America, Central America and South America. Being from Perú (for those who don't know, Perú is a country located in South America), I am also an American, as well as anybody from Chile, Brazil, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico or Canada, because all of this countries (and more of course) are located in the American continent.

Then, maybe you should call yourselves "North Americans"... Well, that wouldn't be completely right because citizens of Mexico and Canada are also North Americans. In fact, if you did call yourselves "Americans" it wouldn't be completely wrong because your country is located in America.

The problem happens when you use those words ("America" and "Americans") as if they were exclusively designed for you, and that is when people like me get really pissed off and write in pages like this. I don't know what is the problem with your culture, thinking too big of yourselves, as if the whole continent was just a part of your country.

So please, start educating yourselves and stop calling yourselves "America" and "Americans" when you try to refer to the "United States of America" as your country and to your "citizenship" as if you owned the continent because you don't (even if your government sometimes acts as if they owned the world... which isn't true).

Jonathan from Panama - Oye America

Dear America,

Soo good old America, growing up I saw you all around. Being from Panama I got used to seeing your green(go) uniform. I have good memories about your soldiers coming in to take out an out of control Dictator to be. You made it possible for our economy to be one of the best in central and south america. You made it possible for there to be elections and us have a democracy. You were truthful to your word and when 1999 came around you and your troops left our BEAUTIFUL country. When in need of help you assisted us and helped us soo much. I don`t understand why the rest of the world is going crazy about you wanting to help Iraq become a for real country. You did the same in a smaller scale in my country and man the outcome has been in a MAJOR SCALE for us!. Many people has died that true but unfortunally that`s what happens when there is a war. In Panama people died but a reason, and I know many people who feel proud of their loved one`s deaths, they did something for their country.

I think people think you are arrogant but I think you are a strong leader. I want to have a leader that can lead and not a leader that tries to please everyone and in the process do a half done job, finish what you started, just hurry up!

I have been able to make some of my dreams come true in your beautiful land, dreams that would have been much much harder to accomplish anywhere else.

I only have one thing that dislike about you. You are not God and I can understand why your definition of freedom is twisted like it is. You allow way too many things in the name of freedom that really just keep people as slaves. I think what I mean is too deep for you to understand and the rest of the people that live in here but that I will have to live with.

America you are a bad ass with a kind heart for all I know and I like bad asses with kind hearts over weak "revolutionary" countries.

Fidel where you at? Hitler where you at? Noriega where you at? and Saddam where YOU AT? thats right no where. Oh what`s up America!

enigmatikmike from Malta - The Tiny Islander

Dear America,

I must admit that writing this letter is proving to be more difficult than expected. I really admire you. I really really do. Or at least did. You seem to have lost it now.

Take the Iraq war. It's irrelevant whether the war was justified or not in the first place. What really irritates me is that your political leaders didn't even bother to plan it properly in the first place. As a result young American men and women are dying for a botched cause, in a botched war. And you let them. Just because your political leaders say so.

Or take the fact that as the world's most industrialised nation you should be the ones tearing down barriers to scientific research, and yet there you are denouncing science in the name of God, just because your religious leaders say so. In the name of God? Since when have we slipped back into the Middle Ages? Over 40% of your people claim not to believe in evolution. How can one not believe in a law of nature? I can deny the existence of gravity but I'll still fall down if I jump off a cliff. It is quite ironic to battle religious extremism on one end of the globe while fostering your own version at home.

It is quite sad that being anti-American is cool. It is quite unfitting that young Europeans should choose to associate themselves with Communism just to spite America (because if they knew what Communism really stood for they wouldn't embrace it so lovingly). Yet it doesn't make sense to ignore your natural allies and go it alone. You may have all the power, but Europe has the experience.

You are in your early adulthood. Physically powerful, and full of testosterone, you consider your weaker elders to be just cowards who are fit for nothing. Yet that is the mistake a lot of young adults make, and come to regret later on. In a world where your enemies are increasing, it would make more sense to consult more with your true friends.

And even accept criticism with a smile once in a while.

The Atheist Jew from Canada

Dear America,

As a Canadian, I realize that you are our protectors. Not that we've needed you lately, but we know you are there.

America is most criticized because it is the chief of police of the world. One country had to take that role, and it was you.

Even though I find it annoying that you have such a high percentage of people who deny evolution and even an ancient earth, I realize that your approach will lead to the availability of the truth. It is there at least, and nobody is prevented from getting to it.

You realize that radical Islam must be reformed, and learned a lesson about trying to make it happen so fast in Iraq. It was inevitable that a middle eastern Muslim majority country had to be taken to task, and Iraq made sense.

We have seen a step forward in many of the Arab Muslim countries because of it. It will take more time than you thought, but at least now, the groundwork for reform is there.

You realize that the Palestinians are the true aggressors in the Israeli conflict. You realize that if the Arabs dropped their guns there would be peace. You realize that it is the Palestinian's fault for the mess they put themselves in. Arab Muslim intolerance must disappear before the world will peaceful.

America, you get it. Don't worry what idiots think of you. In the morning they will still be idiots.
History will salute what America is doing today.

Orikinla from Nigeria

Dear America,

"Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day."
~Thomas Jefferson

"Nigeria at this moment is not "most Corrupt" just "6th Corrupt" and if that is what it is according to this particular measuring stick then so be it (at least it is consistent!)"

Which indices made Nigeria "the most corrupt in 2000 it is now the 6th most corrupt"?

I was once a Unicef Consultant and privy to the same similar indices used in the summation of the levels of unemployment and populations in the State of the World Human Development Reports and using Western mathematics for African developments were erroneous.

An unemployed man in America is totally different from an unemployed man in Nigeria. In Nigeria, all our so called unemployed people are engaged in petty trading and other commercial activities since they have no social security system to take care of their temporary deprivations. We also have own extended family welfare system that these Western statistics cannot be used to measure economic developments in Africa. Commerce and corruption are within the same matrix of human development.

Now in tagging any country as 6th or even 100th most corrupt nation in the world, the indices cannot be the same.

I am not defending corruption in Nigeria.
I don't just agree with the Western yardstick used in judging Africa.

Our Police officers collect bribe. But why?
Did they study the reasons for the low level of human capital development in Nigeria and how that has affected the environment and the human environment determines the evolution of human development.

I was also engaged in national Family Planning projects under the USAID in Nigeria and these differences were noted.

What or who made Nigeria corrupt.

Sokari mentioned less corrupt African countries?

What are the conditions of life in these countries like Ghana and Botswana?

What kind of corruption are we measuring here? Public misappropriation of funds and bribery in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa where the ruling oligarchs and multinational corporations have so exploited and abused and misused the natural resources and economically enslaved the low income wage earners who are deliberately underpaid from the public sector to the private sector? Like here in the Nigeria LNG RAs where the Nigerian teachers teaching in the Nigeria LNG School cannot enroll their own children and are not given any accommodation within the RAs. And one of the teachers lost his wife during childbirth, because he couldn't afford the quality medical care she needed and the Nigeria LNG RA Hospital said his wife was not entitled to any medical care in the hospital and his children cannot even be admitted to the hospital. But, the White teachers have their children in the Nigeria LNG RA School with full first class accommodation and medical care.

Have you been to our police barracks?
I don't pray for even my worst enemy to live in the Nigerian police barracks. Because, they are not different from the worst tenement in the worst ghettoes in America and other developed countries. And do you know the minimum wage of the police officers?
And they say they collect bribe?
What is bribe in America and Europe is not bribe in Nigeria.

What of the corruption in America where the crime rate in New York alone in a month is worse than the crime rate in Nigeria in one year. Where teenage pregnancies are in hundreds of thousands? Where abortions are state rights?

So what or which indices shall we use to determine these notoriety and monstrosity of criminal corruption in America?

The billions of dollars of stolen African public funds are in American and European banks for years and they knew these were stolen funds and they collected them and have pooled them into the same IMF, Paris Club, London Club and other Western and Eastern financial funds from which they have been giving loans and "White Elephant" grants for their sponsored "White Elephant" projects in Nigeria and other African countries. Now we read about "Abacha Loot" returned from Swiss Banks. What of the interests? Now they want us to thank them for debt relief? Which debt? The debt or the interest?

$200 million of Abacha loot in a Swiss bank for over seven years! Do you know how much that money has generated in their economy?
So, what of the implications of the collections of stolen Nigerian public funds in Swiss banks which to me is worse than the much publicized Nigerian Internet Scammers.

A thief is a thief whether you steal one dollar or one billion dollar and whether you stole it or kept the stolen property.
Is stolen public funds not stolen property?

America, since you are the fire brigade of the world, come and help us put out the fire in the Niger Delta before the fire engulfs the whole of Nigeria!

Jasen from Macedonia

Dear America,
All those small conflict and wars you make all over the world really makes me sick. I could not believe US are actually doing this stuff until it happened in my country. I could see they were bombing neighboring Serbia because of that a**hole Milosevic and I tried to justify it somehow. Even I'm actually Serb by nationality and I had (and still have) large part of my closest relatives and friends there. I tried to digest all the assuring bullshit they were putting on their media. But after few years all those local crimes and peasants (mostly Albanians from Kosovo) they were arming, started attacking Macedonia. A small poor country that tried somehow to defend itself from a bunch of armed criminals. And what happens next is Macedonians got put in same light like Serbs nationalists. At the same time bunch of military consulting experts and agencies from US and Europe started offering services and making cash out of this. These people were "helping" the war to start up using their ties in media, politicians etc. This makes it clear war by itself is money maker. I just could not believe all the lies that I saw on TV those days. BBC was MAKING things up in front of my eyes! It was unbelievable how they deliberately changed facts and setup up totally bullshit news from there. Like anyone actually really cared about it after all. It was happening and there was nothing no one could do. All those people need to make cash and I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. There is always some poor and uneducated people that your corrupt politicians will sell weapons to make war and to make money. America you are a monster. You are feeding with weak countries! Damn you. You f*cked up my life.

Mamduh from Egypt - Good Goals, But Too Many Deaths?

Dear America,
You're a good country with good, kind people. And I believe it was good of you to go get us rid of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban in Afghanistan, and of Saddam in Iraq... But, really, you should find a way for you to end the wars that started, and that don't seem to be approaching an end any time soon.

You happen to have a common enemy as some of us in the Middle East; that is religious fundamentalism. This is probably just out of our good luck to find a country like you to defend us against fundamentalist Islam. But, on the other hand, should so many people really be dying?

I oppose Taliban, Saddam, and all other dictatorships in the Middle East (including the dictatorship in Egypt). But, at the same time, I'm not happy with the death of so many people in Iraq and in Afghanistan...

I hope you find ways to end your current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, now that you've done a big part of your good goals there (got rid of Iraqi dictatorship, and Afghan fundamentalism).

Good luck in that, America.

Mo from Canada

Dear America,
A lot of people are angry with you right now, and I think you may have trouble understanding why.

It's not just that you lie, cheat and steal. And it's not only that you don't care what the rest of us think, or even if we exist. It's not just that you're always at war and telling us to jump in. It's more than the fact that you never admit to being wrong, ever.

It is indeed all of these things, and plenty more, because let's face it; you've banged into everybody over the years, with varying damages. There isn't one nation most of us can name that you haven't invaded, exploited, threatened, tried to intimidate, or disenfranchise at one time or another, and let me tell you, the ones we can't name have seen for themselves or heard us all talk. But the reason I am angry is one I believe is buried underneath the surface of a lot of frustration toward you in the world, because, as you often tell us, you're not all bad.

The things you have bragged about for so long, your courage, conviction, willingness to stand up and fight for what's right, for the rights and freedoms you claim to have introduced to the world, we are not seeing; it is clearer than ever at this moment that you have been resting on your laurels. You have really accomplished many things to be proud of, and if you could sit upon your feats humbly, perhaps much respect would flow your way. However, it seems that for years you have pointed at the will of your forefathers and demanded respect for their integrity, yet these are men who would have looked at your last two elections and picked up guns. Not only are you resting, your accomplishments are being erased.

A large part of you realizes what's wrong, but we the world see no significant effort on your part to take control while crimes are being committed in your name, and so sympathy is fading fast. It is not enough to say that your vote went the other way when you know that the process is damaged. It is not enough to say that it is out of your hands when you have not attempted to grasp it. When your system has run away from you, and is taking drastic measures throughout the world for its self-preservation, it may take drastic measures to halt it and set it right. If this is not done before it is too late, eventually you will have to recover what was lost by inaction.

We are frustrated because something has to be done, only you can do it, but you're not. And quite possibly over two billion people in the world are behind you.

This is not a left or right issue. It is right or wrong, do or don't. You don't blame the left arm for letting the right arm smack when they share the same head. You who understand what is happening are already more capable than the rest in this tug of war, because your fight is on the side of truth. History shows that truth eventually conquers, but not by itself. It has to be spoken loudly, shouted when necessary, and defended at all costs. If there is one ultimate purpose we as a species can reasonably point to in response to "why?" it is truth.

You have been taught to take criticism of your country personally, and respond defensively, but the America I am speaking to should be hearing encouragement. The truth is, led by you, your nation has the influence and wealth to steer the world in the curing of many of humanity's ails, thereby greatly reducing angst, conflict and the "need" for exorbitant defenses, and vastly increasing the wealth and standard of living for everyone. We have reached a place in time when we can either create huge problems or solve huge problems, and you just happen to be at the helm, holding the responsibility that goes with it. Is America a place where you sit back and see what happens? The destructive force that smears your name represents you only with your consent.

Tonidius from Germany - What is USA???

Dear America,
I got this blog from a friend of me in America. At first I don't know what I should write here. Honestly, I didn't live in USA just one day so it's hard to know what the people there think and what the life there is. But here are some opinions from me, from the people who don't live in USA.

I don't like politics, but the way USA using politics on others countries are really bad actions. What do they think they are??? They think they have right to kill the people?? They think they have right to judge the freedom in another countries??? They think they have right to do what they want in this world??? Back to Vietnam's war, and look at now to what happens in Middle East. They are the same. USA just make some reasons for the war so that the people in USA think that they have right. But the world is not blind like the people who are living in USA. The politics in USA make people blind and just heard to government. They almost don't have their own opinions for what happens in this world. They think that they have to get freedom for another the country and they are proud of that. They don't think that its own problems of those countries. I know that in USA, the people don't really have a freedom like they talk on television or on communicating system. They still don't have their own freedom in their own home how can they go out and take freedom for others??? They gain and blow the ethnic's grudge in each country they want to set a war. They use those country's people to fight to their own people(the obvious example is the war in Iraq). In addition, do you know where the weapons of these war are from?? From USA. They deal with both sides and run their weapon company.....

I got shock 5 years ago when the WTC in New York was down by 2 planes. We still didn't know all the truth of this attack. But in the point of this attack, I just asked, why?? Why not in another country but in New York-USA??? Many people in Midde East have celebrated for that??? Why the people do that?? They celebrate for the unhumanity-act??? There are so many and many questions I got, but cant find out the answers. And its not my problem though. Just thought, USA would have to be so arrogant and put their a** in the sides of the peoples in the countries they have made a war before they make another mistakes...not only American's lives are worth but also others lives are worth too, because we are all HUMAN...

Dear America,

You guys are great!! I mean you are outgoing people, very warm with foreigners, always smiling and talking, that’s cool!! Anyway, you have to improve your reputation for what [illegible] foreign affairs ‘cause in most of the cases you seem to act very arrogant, trying to impose your point of view to everyone in the world (Iraq’s case especially but your attitude towards Europe as well!!) demonstrate to be the noble country that you, in many occasions, showed to be a country very patriotic and very democratic.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
